The title is about how the salt level in our blood is indicative of the level of salt in the sea when our ancestors left the ocean. On average, seawater in the world’s oceans has a salinity of about 3.5% (35 g/L, or 599 mM), but normal saline, a solution of 0.90% w/v of NaCl, about 300 mOsm/L or 9.0 g per liter. Normal saline is a close approximation to the osmolarity of NaCl in blood.
